Teenage Pregnancy
Ken Black asked:

Although you might think that acne is the preserve of pubescent teenagers, you’d be very much mistaken. Not only can it afflict pretty much anyone, but figures show that 25% of adult males, as well as double that amount of adult females, suffer from this often embarrassing and frustrating affliction.

Despite oil production ramping up during puberty, adults can suffer from it from their twenties all the way to their forties and beyond. The biggest problem with adult acne is that it’s usually more likely to lead to social embarrassment or a lack of confidence than teenage acne, and this can be devastating for anyone suffering from it. Thankfully, there are a variety of treatments available.

Whereas the causes of a lot of acne can be defined, adult acne is more difficult. While some people believe that it’s down to hormones, other people believe it’s genetic. It may even be down to something as simple as the individuals themselves, and show no similar causes on other people.

If it is determined to be caused by your hormones, then you’ll need to go and visit either a dermatologist or a health care specialist, who can carry out tests to find out what hormones need to be treated.

The most common cause of acne is blocked pores, the oil that builds up due to this in return causes acne. Some other causes can be what a person eats or drinks, stress, deficiency in vitamins and other reasons. Since adult acne can be caused for a myriad of reasons, proper treatment is important.

Although acne can be found on young children, this is usually less frequent than it is on young adults or beyond. This is because hormones, which young children haven’t developed yet, can cause acne. However, this all changes as you get older. Not only will your hormones mature with you, oil production increases in your body, and combined with the extra hormones, can lead to acne.

Some of the most common reasons for hormone increase are pregnancy, puberty and the menopause. Androgens can also cause acne, and these cells are in both males and females. Since androgen increases oil production, this can lead to the pores getting clogged, and again this is where acne comes into effect.

There are many types of treatment available for adult acne, and although they range in strength, they’re all effective one way or another.

Funny enough, one of the most recommended treatments is the type given to teenagers, Benzoyl peroxide. This is proven to be the most effective method of medicinal treatment for acne on the market today. However, like anything, for it to work effectively, you need to follow the guidelines for its use to the letter, and see the course through.

Where Benzoyl really shines is that not only is it a non-invasive approach, but your skin won’t build up any kind of natural barrier to it, unlike other methods, and for this reason, if you see results the first time you use it, you can be sure that it will be effective against any acne you may get. It’s also gentler with your skin, unlike many other harsh treatments available.

If your acne is genetic, and it runs in your family, then this could be down to both androgen and hormonal reasons. It is a proven fact that almost half of all women who have adult acne suffer from it due to higher androgen, and lower than normal binding globulin, which is an important protein in your blood system.

If this is the case, then all that needs correcting is the way that these hormones are balanced. This is achieved by either hormone correcting treatment, which can be arranged by your doctor or specialist, or over-the-counter treatments of the deficiency isn’t serious enough to warrant more specialized treatment.

Whatever your adult acne, you’re not alone, and it is important to remember it’s more common than you might realize, and other people are going through what you are. Because of this, treatments are plentiful and effective.

If you are suffering, speak to your doctor about what’s available and what would be best for you. Not only will he or she be able to advise what drugs to use, they can also recommend if you need more specialized treatment or not.

Jasmine Stone asked:

The minute you find out you are pregnant you know things are going to be changing, from your waist size to those little stretch marks that pop up. Stretch marks are exactly that, red or purple marks left in your skin because it has stretched. The most common areas for it to appear is the buttocks, thighs, stomach, breasts and even arms. 90 percent of all pregnant women will get them, whether they get a lot or a few depends on the body and how they are preventing them.

There are a ton of lotions out there that claim to help prevent stretch marks, such as scar serum, cocoa butter or Maderma. Make sure your skin is always moist, this helps in stretching the skin and not tearing it. There are new discoveries every day, ask your doctor what he/she recommends. Try them out yourself first and see if they work for you. This isn’t something you just put on one time during your pregnancy, you’ll have to make this a daily effort in order for it to work. That’s where most women fail, they just stop doing it.

During your pregnancy try to eat healthy and stay in shape. This can help to keep off any access weight. The recommended weight gain for the average, 25-35 healthy pregnancy is 25-35 pounds. Make sure you drink plenty of water, staying hydrated helps keep the skin healthy. The moment your skin dries out you can begin getting stretch marks.

If you’ve had one or more children your chances of getting more stretch marks will increase. Your skin has already been stretched out and you are about to do it again. Large babies and multiple babies can increase your chances of getting stretch marks too. Begin using preventing creams and lotions with vitamins A and E in them, as soon as you find out your are pregnant and try to lessen your chances of getting them.

After the pregnancy if you have any stretch marks you may still have a few stretch marks, even after all the care you took. These do fade over time, so don’t worry about the way you look. If they are unbearable to you and you’ve waited a while, you can choose to have a tummy tuck or laser removal. Make an appointment with a dermatologist to see what he/she has to tell you. You may discover that you can live with them after all.

Besides caring for your skin daily and eating right, there isn’t much you can do to prevent these beautiful pregnancy marks, however this doesn’t mean you don’t have to try. Take comfort in knowing that half the woman you know that have been pregnant probably have a mark or two, they may even have a little road map. Think about it as you’ve just been initiated into the gang of motherhood. No woman should ever feel ashamed of her stretch marks, they may not be the prettiest thing in the world but they do represent one thing…your child. Remember that the next time you are getting disgusted by them.

Pregnancy tests that you can take at home are one of the most sensible purchases you will ever make. Not only are they quite economical, but they will give you a piece of mind that you just can’t put a price on. Pregnancy tests are always available at your nearest Pregnancy Center. These tests are true first urine tests. These are looking for the human hormone that is generated by pregnancy.

These tests are preferably performed early in the morning with your “first urine” of the morning. Pregnancy can be detected as early as 10 days past conception with a concentrated urine sample.

These test kits for the detection of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in serum or urine specimens. This test kit is used to obtain a visual, qualitative result for early detection of pregnancy. More importantly, the more options you have that are available to you, especially if the pregnancy is not a planned one,

1. Free Pregnancy Testing

It is believed by many that young girls should have access to free pregnancy testing options. If they have had unprotected sex, then speaking to a school councilor or youth leader will help to locate the nearest free testing facility or womens centre. Some highschools even carry these testing kits in the nurses office.

2. The Concequences Are Not Worth It

Many young girls feel embarrassed about seeking help, or afraid that their parents will find out. In this case they need to ask the people about confidentiality issues prior to telling them what it is they need. In the event that the girl is in fact pregnant then she should be given the opportunity to tell her parents on her own. There are, of course, some exceptions to this rule. For example, if the girl becomes an immediate danger to herself or others after finding out the results of the tests - perhaps becoming suicidal - then there is just cause for a counsellor to contact the parents or other experts regarding everything.

Later Signs of Teen Pregnancy

As a pregnancy progresses, the signs and symptoms become more pronounced and harder for teens to miss. Some of these pregnancy signs include:

* an enlargement of the abdomen

* weight gain or loss

* aches such as backaches or headaches

* quickening (feeling of fetal movement)

Unplanned Pregnancy

It is likely that the pregnancy is an unplanned one (due to your age), and is common to feel shocked, scared, panicked, confused, embarrassed, isolated or lonely. Parents, boyfriend and professionals are all there to help support and give you advice/information on the options available to you, but only you can make the choice to continue with the pregnancy or not. Its a decision that should be made based on what YOU want to do and not what others think you should do.

Jasmine Stone asked:

There is nothing more stressful than to have something go wrong during pregnancy. It doesn’t matter if it is your first time being pregnant or your fourth. There are many things to be concerned about during your pregnancy and it is easier when you know what they are.

Vaginal bleeding- This may also known as spotting, but make sure that is what is going on. There is a difference between actively bleeding and spotting. Spotting is lightly bleeding kind of like your period, the blood can be red, pink or even brown. If you are bleeding actively with any pain call your doctor, if you can’t get a hold of him go immediately to the emergency room. Bleeding can be a number of things from implantation, ectopic pregnancy, labor, infection or even miscarriage. Always let your doctor know, so everything can be ruled out, you’ll feel better too.

Stomach pain or cramping- During the pregnancy it may be hard to decipher the difference between a growing pain and an actual stomach pain/cramping. However, if you do get a pain of any sort rest. After a few minutes if it doesn’t subside, call your doctor and describe the pain to him. Don’t worry about it if you find out you only had gas or were having Braxton hicks contractions, at least you know everything is okay with pregnancy.

Gush of liquid- This could mean you are in labor and that your water broke, however if it isn’t close to the time of birth it can be something else. Call your doctor immediately and head for the emergency room.  Dehydration- While you are pregnant it is easy to become dehydrated, especially if you have morning sickness or just don’t drink those 8 glasses of water. If you find yourself pale, dry mouth or dizzy, you could be dehydrated and should be seen by a doctor. Dehydration can cause premature labor and/or distress on the pregnancy.

Painful urination - Could be a urinary tract infection, also known as UTI. This can be easily treated with medication or by drinking lots of fluids and cranberry juice. A urinary tract infection isn’t something to be embarrassed about, it is very common amongst pregnant women. The growing belly pushes against your ureters and makes it harder for it to flow through. Which of course can cause infection. Another way to find out if you have it is if you have a foul odor when you pee.

Pregnancies can be scary enough, there’s no reason to add to it. If you are ever in doubt or have a concern talk with your doctor. It is common that first time moms are worried about many pains that they feel. Never fear calling because you are afraid of waking the doctor up or because you feel silly. Being silly might just save the baby. While you are worrying, you are only causing stress on you and the baby, find out what’s wrong and relieve your anxiety.

Alex Ellorde asked:

Getting involved in relationships with the opposite sex is part of growing up. Teenage girls and boys tend to think about what it means to be involved in a sexual relationship. There are many things to be taken into consideration before one should decide to have sex. There is the issue of morality which can make one feel guilty about premarital sex. Such guilt can play a major role in affecting one’s emotional and psychological well-being, which usually leads to anxiety and depression. Health concerns are also on top of the agenda whenever a person decides to engage in a serious, intimate relationship. Sexual health is an important matter to think about since it is no longer safe to engage in unprotected sex. One must be aware that sexual relationships can expose people to the risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases (STD). No one can tell if a person is infected with STD. Even healthy-looking people can have the disease without them knowing it. Be sure that you and your partner are protected before engaging in any sexual activity. Unwanted pregnancy is also another consequence of sexual relationships which young people should think about. Many young people’s future have been ruined by getting pregnant even when they are not yet emotionally and psychologically ready for the responsibility that teenage pregnancy entails. Even if you don’t get pregnant or infected by STD, consider how you will feel if the relationship breaks up.

Many young people are not comfortable talking to their parents about this situation. It is important that you have a trusted adult or health care provider with whom you can discuss all your concerns and worries. Times like these can be very confusing for most young people and having someone to talk to would do wonders to gain more clarity and objective advice about sexuality.

Young people who make the decision to engage in any sexual activity should learn how to protect themselves aginst STD and prevent unwanted pregnancy. For contraception, there are various products out in the market that are effective in preventing pregnancy. Costs, methods of use, and level of protection against STD vary depending on the contraceptive.

There are two popular types of contraception, namely: the use of birth control pills and the condom. Both contraceptives can protect against pregnancy and STD. Males use some types of contraception that are usually different from what females normally use. It is good to know all about the different types of female and male contraceptions if you are into a sexual relationship. Together, the involved partners should figure out the best choice for the two of them. The type of contraception can have an effect on the health of both people in the relationship. Only females can get pregnant, but both males and females can get STD. Sexual intercourse always increase the risk for unwanted pregnancy and STD. Practicing safe sex with only one partner who is uninfected and has no other sexual partners can greatly lower such risk.

Birth control pills are small contraceptive tablets that usually contain two types of synthetic female hormones, the progestin and estrogen. This is called the “combination oral contraceptive”. Estrogen and progesterone are produced by the ovaries. These hormones prevent pregnancy by suppressing the pituitary gland, which stops the development and the release of the egg in the ovary, called ovulation. The progestin hormone also helps to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg and changes the lining of the uterus. Birth control pills contain only one hormone called progestin and considered to be the “mini-Pill.” This type of contraceptive works by suppressing ovulation and helping to prevent the male’s sperm from reaching the egg.

The combination pill is slightly more effective than the progestin-only pill. But there are some people whose bodies don’t react well to the estrogen in the combined pill. It is better that they take the progestin-only pill to avoid any complications from side effects. The birth control pill is highly effective if you take the pill exactly as directed by your health care provider. The pill is to be taken once a day, at the same time everyday. Be sure to have back-up contraception such as condoms during the remainder of the pill cycle when diarrhea or vomiting occur, or when you are taking some other medication that could change the effectiveness of the birth control pills.

Aside from preventing unwanted pregnancy, birth control pills have other medical benefits, such as easing menstrual cramps, regulating the menstrual cycle, reducing the amount and length of menstrual bleeding.

Having a sexual relationship entails great responsibility, not only to yourself, but to your partner as well. Always remember to engage in safe sex.

Connie Limon asked:

Your feelings at this time may be very mixed. You may think it hard to believe you are actually pregnant. You may have feelings of being out of control and feelings of fear. You may need help with money and/or housing and do not know which way to turn. If you cannot tell your parents try talking to someone else you trust and who can help you at this time.

If you have feelings of fear that someone may hurt you because you are pregnant or if you want to hurt yourself, talk to a doctor, nurse, school counselor, or a pastor of a church. Any of these people will be able to help you. You can receive counseling about pregnancy and your choices from a qualified health care professional or agencies such as Planned Parenthood.

You do have choices about your pregnancy. Think carefully about having and caring for a baby. It is truly a “big deal.” If you decide to end the pregnancy, the earlier you do so the better. Depending on the stage of your pregnancy there are several options for you:

? Medical abortion can be done within 49 days from the first day of your last menstrual period. This method involves drugs taken (of course under the supervision of a qualified health care professional), which causes the baby to be expelled

? Menstrual aspiration can be done within 1-3 weeks after a missed menstrual period and involves using a syringe to remove the pregnancy from the lining of the uterus (also under the care of a qualified health care professional)

? Suction curettage can be done up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. Under the care of a qualified health care professional the contents of the uterus is removed by a suction device that is inserted into the uterus. After 12 weeks of pregnancy this procedure may be called a “dilation and evacuation.”

? Labor-inducing abortion is used for abortions later in pregnancy. Drugs put into the vagina and injected into the uterus or given through an intravenous (IV) line induces labor

You also have choices about what to do after the baby is born. You can keep the baby or you can place the baby for adoption. You can also place the baby with foster parents for a short time until you can take care of your baby. The final decision about pregnancy is yours.

Think about what it means to be a mother and to take care of another person much of the day and night. There will not be much time for the things you used to do. Pregnancy and childbirth will change your life forever.

Caring for a baby is a lot of work and responsibilities that can enrich your life in ways you never dreamed were possible.

Caring for a baby takes a lot of time and money. You will still need to find time for yourself and school. Will you have help from friends, family, or neighbors to care for the baby when you need time away? Daycare can be expensive. There are agencies, however, that help you with daycare if you have no family or friends to help you. Qualified health care professionals, school nurses, counselors or social workers and agencies such as Planned Parenthood can help you find daycare or babysitting resources.

Is the baby’s father willing to help you? The baby’s father can and needs to play a role during pregnancy and birth if he is available to do so. He can learn to take care of the baby and share this responsibility with you. Many teenaged parents are not ready to commit to a marriage, however, even if you do not get married, the father is required by law to pay child support payments.

You and your baby will need a place to live, money for food, clothing, car seats, strollers, baby beds, play pens and many other items and accessories.

Prenatal care is vital for increasing your chances of a healthy pregnancy, birth and baby. The earlier you start your prenatal care the better it will be for you and the baby. Prenatal care includes medical care and counseling.

It is a good idea to take childbirth classes if you decide to keep your baby. Check in your area to see if there are special classes just for teenage pregnancy. In these classes you will learn more about pregnancy, giving birth, breastfeeding and becoming a parent. The classes can help teach you the skills you will need to take care of your baby which includes how to feed, diaper and bathe your baby.

If you are not already eating healthy, now is the time you definitely need to start. You will also need to avoid substances that may harm your baby such as alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drugs. Take only the drugs your health care professional prescribes to you and take them exactly according to his or her instructions. Do not increase or decrease the amount. Most usually pregnant women, teenage pregnancies or older, are not given even prescription medications, however, in some instances this may be necessary. Always follow the instructions of your health care professional.

The following are some healthier eating tips:

? Eat sandwiches and hamburgers with lettuce, tomato and other sliced vegetables

? Snack on fresh or dried fruits and/or vegetables

? Stay pretty much away from the cookies and candy bars, they will add weight but no nutrition for you or your baby

? Eat baked potatoes with butter or with low-fat sour cream

? Drink 100% fruit juice or milk more often than sodas

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can create a number of problems for your baby which includes:

?Mental, physical and emotional problems

No one should smoke during pregnancy or around you during pregnancy. This also can cause a number of problems which include:

? More likely to have a miscarriage

? Baby may not gain enough weight during your pregnancy

? Baby can be at a higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome

After the baby is born smoking should still be prohibited. It can cause the baby to be ill more often and to have breathing problems.

The use of street drugs can cause severe problems which include:

? Miscarriage

? A baby born dead

? Birth defects

? Giving birth too early

? Having a baby too small or who is addicted

Realizing you are a pregnant may be scary. You do have choices and options, and there are people you can trust to help you if you cannot tell your parents.

Groshan Fabiola asked:

The every day common home pregnancy test works by recognizing a certain hormone that is only present in the urine of woman; this hormone is called human chorionic gonadotropin and it first appears in the human blood stream when the fertilized egg implants its self in the wall of to uterus to begin growing and development. It first appears at about a six day period since the fertilization has occurred and than rapidly increases in quantity doubling in amount in about every 2 days. The test is only able to give a good proper answer after an amount of 14 days has passed since the fertilized egg has implanted its self in the uterus; it is also the time most likely for the first period to appear after the sexual contact has occurred. Still not all the test are accurate enough to give a proper prediction after only this short of an amount of time. Research has come up with an answer to the question when the perfect time to do the test? Would be and that is a week after your expected period before testing.

In order to sell their products as best they can, farmaceutical companies claim that the tests are accurate as soon as the day the woman misses her period. Still, studies made have shown that this is actually not so true. The fact is that humans are so different one from another that the level of hGC can vary a lot from woman to woman especially in the case where a pregnancy is suspected. A study made on the top 18 test at this time on the market has shown that only one of them was sensitive enough to actually give a good correct answer in all the cases. The other ones were able to do just 16 % of the actual pregnancies. The best time to do the test is as said earlier a week after the period should have came.

Scientists have still to develop a truly accurate test in such a way that it is possible to confirm the pregnancy in a woman the first day after the period should have come. The best test was able to pick up only a very faint trace of hormones in the urine showing a very little positive chance that the woman was pregnant.

In order to use the test as correctly as it should certain things must be done. The first would be to actually check the expiring date on the test. Only after this has been confirmed to still be valid the woman may proceed to taking the test. She must also check to see if the test hasn’t gotten in any contact with moist air or any water. If this is the case or suspicion do exist using a new one is the best next thing to do. Reading the instructions is a big must if the test is to be used correctly. Will some test require the women to pee directly on the test others may be more demanding requiring only a drop of urine to be placed at a certain spot on the test.

Dan Celentano asked:

Mr. Rogers Neighborhood is the greatest kids show that ever was. That’s right, I said Mr. Rogers. Why? Because the man was way ahead of his time. He taught kids that their value is not based on anything else but on who they are as individuals. This was the mans message throughout his whole career. It’s a message that not only applied to little kids but to everyone who shapes their image based on what OTHER PEOPLE think of them rather than on what they think of themselves. Out of all the e mails I get from troubled teens, I would say a good 90% of the problems could be solved by understanding the message this man tries to get across to little kids. That message can be summarized in one of the songs he made up for his show: It goes like this:

“It’s you I like, it’s not the things you wear. It’s not the way you do your hair, but it’s you I like. The way you are right now, the way down deep inside of you. It’s you I like. And I hope you’ll always remember, even when you’re feeling blue, it’s you, it’s you, it’s you I like.”

Kids stuff, right? Well, I don’t think so. How many teenagers can actually say this to themselves and really mean it? Can you?

Let’s do a little link thing here. Let’s link Mr. Rogers to this next item:

Unfortunately the number of teenagers having babies in this country is on the rise again. What does Mr. Rogers have to do with this? In previous articles I’ve talked about how teenagers get USED by their partner when they have sex (see my website choicesforteens.com: “Why Teens Have Sex.”). When somebody says they “love you and want to have sex with you,” it’s not because they are committed to you as a person unless of course you’re married. If you think otherwise, you’re living in Fantasy Land. Mr. Rogers helps me make this point very clear. How? Well, how many people who sexually USE OTHERS can say the words in Mr. Rogers song to the person they’re using and really mean it?

“It’s you I like, It’s not the way you do your hair, it’s not the things you wear, but it’s you I like. The way you are right now, the way down deep inside of you. It’s you, it’s you, it’s YOU I really like.”

If your partner could say these words to you and really mean it, he or she would NOT see a need to use you sexually and put you in a position of hurting yourself or others. If more teenagers realized this, teenager pregnancy would be a WHOLE lot lower.

How about you? Do you believe the person you are dating right now can say those words to you and really mean it? I sure hope so.

Mr. Rogers may be just a kid’s show, but his message is all grown up.

Groshan Fabiola asked:

During pregnancy many women may experience pain in their chest or heartburn. This condition is more common during the first trimester of a woman’ s pregnancy. Preventing this conditions or curing them is very important in general and especially during pregnancy.

As the baby starts to grow during pregnancy, the pressure exercised on your internal organs increases. The food ans acid reflux from the stomach also increase and these are the main causes of a heartburn. Here are some of the most important steps that you can follow during pregnancy to relieve the symptoms of a heartburn, control the pain that you are having and maybe even prevent recurrence of these conditions:

- while pregnancy, do not limit yourself to three big meals; on the contrary, try to eat four five lighter meals so your body can digest the food and thus prevent heartburn;

- to prevent these conditions, even if you have cravings during pregnancy, try to stay away from foods that can cause a heartburn, such as: fried foods, fats, chocolate, citrus fruits or caffeine;

- the risk of acid reflux during pregnancy can also be reduced if you avoid eating just before you go to bed; if possible try to eat a couple of hours before you go to sleep so your body can digest the food;

- during pregnancy your body will go through a lot of changes and clothes that you bought just a few weeks back might not fit you anymore; in this case, give them away or throw them, but do not wear clothes that are tight especially during pregnancy; besides the fact that wearing them can cause heartburn or acid reflux, it can also damage the health of your baby;

- alcohol, smoking are very harmful for any person and especially for a woman during pregnancy; avoid them as much as possible;

- do not take any medication against a heartburn until you have asked your doctor; pregnancy is a very delicate time and every drug that you take can affect your baby;

Even if every pregnancy differs from a woman to another, these are some of the most important steps that you can follow to prevent or at least control your condition. When it comes to the causes of a heartburn or acid reflux, these too can be very different from a pregnant woman to another. Pregnancy is sometimes a difficult period and you must be very careful in the choices that you make.
