Teenage Pregnancy
Dan Celentano asked:

Mr. Rogers Neighborhood is the greatest kids show that ever was. That’s right, I said Mr. Rogers. Why? Because the man was way ahead of his time. He taught kids that their value is not based on anything else but on who they are as individuals. This was the mans message throughout his whole career. It’s a message that not only applied to little kids but to everyone who shapes their image based on what OTHER PEOPLE think of them rather than on what they think of themselves. Out of all the e mails I get from troubled teens, I would say a good 90% of the problems could be solved by understanding the message this man tries to get across to little kids. That message can be summarized in one of the songs he made up for his show: It goes like this:

“It’s you I like, it’s not the things you wear. It’s not the way you do your hair, but it’s you I like. The way you are right now, the way down deep inside of you. It’s you I like. And I hope you’ll always remember, even when you’re feeling blue, it’s you, it’s you, it’s you I like.”

Kids stuff, right? Well, I don’t think so. How many teenagers can actually say this to themselves and really mean it? Can you?

Let’s do a little link thing here. Let’s link Mr. Rogers to this next item:

Unfortunately the number of teenagers having babies in this country is on the rise again. What does Mr. Rogers have to do with this? In previous articles I’ve talked about how teenagers get USED by their partner when they have sex (see my website choicesforteens.com: “Why Teens Have Sex.”). When somebody says they “love you and want to have sex with you,” it’s not because they are committed to you as a person unless of course you’re married. If you think otherwise, you’re living in Fantasy Land. Mr. Rogers helps me make this point very clear. How? Well, how many people who sexually USE OTHERS can say the words in Mr. Rogers song to the person they’re using and really mean it?

“It’s you I like, It’s not the way you do your hair, it’s not the things you wear, but it’s you I like. The way you are right now, the way down deep inside of you. It’s you, it’s you, it’s YOU I really like.”

If your partner could say these words to you and really mean it, he or she would NOT see a need to use you sexually and put you in a position of hurting yourself or others. If more teenagers realized this, teenager pregnancy would be a WHOLE lot lower.

How about you? Do you believe the person you are dating right now can say those words to you and really mean it? I sure hope so.

Mr. Rogers may be just a kid’s show, but his message is all grown up.

Teenage Pregnancy
Groshan Fabiola asked:

During pregnancy many women may experience pain in their chest or heartburn. This condition is more common during the first trimester of a woman’ s pregnancy. Preventing this conditions or curing them is very important in general and especially during pregnancy.

As the baby starts to grow during pregnancy, the pressure exercised on your internal organs increases. The food ans acid reflux from the stomach also increase and these are the main causes of a heartburn. Here are some of the most important steps that you can follow during pregnancy to relieve the symptoms of a heartburn, control the pain that you are having and maybe even prevent recurrence of these conditions:

- while pregnancy, do not limit yourself to three big meals; on the contrary, try to eat four five lighter meals so your body can digest the food and thus prevent heartburn;

- to prevent these conditions, even if you have cravings during pregnancy, try to stay away from foods that can cause a heartburn, such as: fried foods, fats, chocolate, citrus fruits or caffeine;

- the risk of acid reflux during pregnancy can also be reduced if you avoid eating just before you go to bed; if possible try to eat a couple of hours before you go to sleep so your body can digest the food;

- during pregnancy your body will go through a lot of changes and clothes that you bought just a few weeks back might not fit you anymore; in this case, give them away or throw them, but do not wear clothes that are tight especially during pregnancy; besides the fact that wearing them can cause heartburn or acid reflux, it can also damage the health of your baby;

- alcohol, smoking are very harmful for any person and especially for a woman during pregnancy; avoid them as much as possible;

- do not take any medication against a heartburn until you have asked your doctor; pregnancy is a very delicate time and every drug that you take can affect your baby;

Even if every pregnancy differs from a woman to another, these are some of the most important steps that you can follow to prevent or at least control your condition. When it comes to the causes of a heartburn or acid reflux, these too can be very different from a pregnant woman to another. Pregnancy is sometimes a difficult period and you must be very careful in the choices that you make.

Generally, there is no real way to tell a woman that she is pregnant. A visit to a doctor or a pregnancy test can confirm one’s pregnancy. But, pregnancy symptoms are also something which you can look forward to confirm whether you are pregnant or not. A woman’s body is the best indicator to confirm her pregnancy. When a woman is pregnant, there are certain hormonal changes that take place in her body. Constipation, cramps, backaches and nausea and so on are all pregnancy symptoms at an earlier stage. You may experience one or few of these pregnancy symptoms, if not all.

Common Pregnancy Symptoms:

A missed period is one of the foremost pregnancy symptoms. Usually in these circumstances you miss your periods or bleeding is less than normal. As mentioned, your body undergoes hormonal changes and the growing uterus that presses against the bowel results in initial pregnancy symptoms like backaches, cramps, constipation and missed period and so on. Your breast tends to become tender and there is darkening of nipples. This is one of the earliest symptoms of pregnancy and usually occurs as early as one week after conception and continues thereafter.

Exhaustion or tiredness is usually associated with pregnancy health related concerns. Pregnancy requires you to take rest as much as you can. Feeling tired or exhaustive is not a temporary phase. It occurs after one to six weeks of conceiving and can last till the entire pregnancy period. You tend to feel extremely hungry and there is a craving for food. Usually, there is no restriction on the amount of food you can have during these days but it is very important that your diet should be healthy and nutritious. Your doctor can be your best guide regarding the kind of diet you should maintain during pregnancy.

Women become extremely sensitive to smell and this is one of earliest pregnancy symptom. Frequent urination due to growing pressure on the bladder, lower abdominal cramps is all pregnancy symptoms. Headaches, nausea and vomiting usually occur after two to ten weeks of conceiving. Generally termed as “morning sickness”, nausea can occur at any time of the day and in extreme cases it will be full fledged vomiting. All these pregnancy symptoms are attributed to hormonal changes in the body.

Pregnancy test is the ultimate way to confirm your pregnancy. Your doctor can always confirm the fact after you are done with your tests. Today, pregnancy tests are very reliable and can give you result as early as ten to fourteen days of fertilization. When you are experience any one or few of these pregnancy symptoms, make it sure that you do not neglect your health. Any tobacco products and alcohol should be totally avoided during pregnancy. Since, your behavior can also be irrational sometimes, it is always better that you give outlet to your emotions in a weekly pregnancy calendar that cover your entire pregnancy journey. Your life will never be the same once you make it a point to enjoy the journey of pregnancy.

How long after pregnancy will it be before a Naval enlisted woman is deployable?

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Sammi A asked:

I know women do not usually deploy during pregnancy and they get approximately six weeks of convalescent leave after giving birth, but do they deploy after six weeks or do they stay on shore and work on shore for some time? It is almost impossible for me to believe that the Navy would leave a 2-month old child without its mother for up to 6 months.

Apurva Shree asked:

One of the essential prerequisites for a healthy baby is an adequate pregnancy weight gain for the mother during her pregnancy. You should get insights into the need for weight gain during pregnancy and explore the link between obesity and pregnancy, if you are planning a baby or have just got the good news.

Need For Weight Gain During Pregnancy

The one time where weight gain among women is actually applauded and encouraged is during pregnancy. Various studies have indicated that babies, which do not receive adequate nourishment while in the womb, tend to be smaller and are prone to cardiac problems later in life. Starvation while in the womb leads to stunted development of various organs including kidneys, pancreas, and liver of the baby. A higher rate of infantile death is also noticed among such babies.

Doctors recommend a pregnancy weight gain of at least 20 pounds for all pregnant women, irrespective of their weight prior to pregnancy. The food eaten by women during pregnancy needs to be chosen with care with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, and other seeds, forming the majority of the diet. Consumption of added fats, sugars, white flour, and refined carbohydrates should be minimal even during the progress of pregnancy week by week.

Pregnancy And Obesity

However there is another problem. If unchecked, pregnancy weight gain in some women may even reach the level of obesity. Many women do not bother about their figure after pregnancy, believing firmly that having a baby leads to losing your once perfect figure, forever. Although, this may be partly true, new moms also need to recognize the link between pregnancy weight gain and pregnancy obesity.

A new mother may have several emotional issues to deal with regarding her newfound status of being a mother. For many women, the incessant pressures and responsibilities that go along with her new role may also lead to overeating, which in turn might cause weight gain, change in her body rhythms and ultimately obesity.

Some women also hold firm the conviction that the weight gained while pregnant is permanent and all attempts to get rid of it would be futile. However, they do not seem to realize that it would only take about a year to overcome the effects of pregnancy weight gain and regain their earlier figure.

Determining of the link between obesity and pregnancy could disclose other health issues apart from obesity. A sudden excessive pregnancy weight gain could be indicative of other factors, such as depression or physical factors such as difficulties faced in the course of pregnancy, ailments of the reproductive system or incontinence.

Conversely, a new mom faces another risk due to her pregnancy weight gain. As her body changes to adapt to her weight gain, the effect may be a further increase in weight gain.

To conclude, although a new mom may consider her body on a lower priority scale when weighed against all her duties and concerns regarding her baby, her responsibility towards herself and a healthy body should not be neglected, as her well being is ultimately her baby well-being too.
